Barking at the Mailman

Barking at the Mailman is Very CommonMailman

The reasons why dogs bark at the mailman or at any delivery man that comes to the door, dog barking at the mailmanis because they are protecting their home.  In their mind when the mailman walks away after putting mail in the mailbox,  the dog thinks it was successful in scaring the intruder away.  So whenever a mailman or delivery person comes to the door, they continue to bark thinking that their bark is what made them leave the premises.

Some dogs will actually bite a mailman or delivery person if they happen to be outdoors when they arrive.  Most delivery people carry Mace on them in case a dog happens to charge at them.  And since mail gets delivered six days a week, dogs get used to routines.  Sometimes they will wait by the window or glass door in anticipation of the mailman.

There are also people who have homes with mail slots at the bottom of their front door.  Often dogs will growl when he sees the slot being opened and mail being tossed through it.  I once had a friend who had one of these slots and told me her dog shredded the mail that came through the mail slot.  So she had to gate the dog in another room.

Reasons Dogs Bury Bones

Reasons why dogs bury bones

Reasons Why Dogs Bury Bones

The reasons why dogs bury bones is because they are natural diggers.  Usually, when dogs have their stomachs full and when there are leftovers, dogs will look for a place to bury it for later consumption.

When my dog is full after a meal and I give him a treat afterwards, I watch him looking for a place in my house to hide it.  If I have a blanket on my sofa, he will go through the digging motion on the blanket.  When he isn’t successful, he carries it in his mouth around the room.

Most house dogs that I know don’t bury bones in their backyards anymore, but do try to hide their toys or treats under beds or behind things, etc.  But if they were to see an outdoor dog digging in the yard, you can bet that the dog that never dug outside will copy the other dog.  Dogs are imitators of other dogs.

Licking Peoples Faces

Licking peoples facesWhy Dogs Lick Peoples Faces?

Dogs like licking peoples faces, because they are being affectionate. They also know that being affectionate, will lead to a belly rub or a lot of attention from their owners or others.  It is also something they do naturally.

It also is a sign of respect to the dogs owner.  They see us as their parent and they are the child; so to speak.  Very social dogs on the other hand, lick everyone all the time.  When dogs are puppies they will lick everyone who holds them.

Some people who aren’t pet owners, do not like it when a dog will lick their face.  They think of all the germs that the dog has picked up from outside or by sniffing other dogs.  But there have been some studies that say that a dogs saliva, may have an antibacterial effect.  Dogs also lick their own wounds when they get hurt.
